Choosing the NSX-R Carpet in Pure Red

Genuine NSX parts are sometimes reproduced even after being discontinued, making it difficult to determine what will truly never be produced again. However, when considering what parts are likely to never be reproduced, I assumed that these would include parts that require storage costs, parts that do not affect driving performance, and parts for rare models like the NSX-R, which are highly desirable.
Therefore, considering that these parts are discontinued and only 68 units were left in stock at Suzuka as of August 16, 2025, and that they also fit the conditions assumed above for a high likelihood of discontinuation, I decided to purchase floor carpets for the 02R, even though this was a planned purchase.
At the time, I felt like I had made a bold purchase, but considering the subsequent price hikes, it turned out to be a very good deal. It was also difficult to decide which parts to choose: the 92R and TypeS (including the S-ZERO) also have a black (NH1L) finish with the same fabric as the 02R's New Pure Red (R145L). However, I chose the New Pure Red (R145L) because I felt that the red contrast would look better on the black body.

New Pure Red Shade

In addition to the 02R, the NSX also offered two other red interiors as part of the standard coupe custom order plan: Pure Red (R105L) and Bordeaux Red (R134L).
However, both shades differ from the 02R's New Pure Red (R145L).
Pure Red (R105L) is a vibrant red, while Bordeaux Red (R134L) is a wine-red hue.
New Pure Red (R145L) is a dark red somewhere between Pure Red (R105L) and Bordeaux Red (R134L), and I feel the term "deep red" is appropriate.
While there is no exact data, I've recreated the three reds online using approximate color codes. The appearance changes dramatically depending on the lighting, so these are merely for comparison purposes.

1. I purchased a set of floor carpets for the 02R. Some parts are the same size, but some are packaged in cardboard boxes and some in plastic packaging. I don't know what criteria they use to determine this.

1. I opened the cardboard box and lined them up. There are a total of seven pieces: four floor sections and three side cowl linings. The red color is not too flashy and has a subdued feel to it, which is nice.

1. The coupe's floor carpets look gray rather than black depending on the lighting, and the floor mats themselves are clearly gray, giving the impression of being more luxurious than sporty.

1. The floor carpet for the coupe has a fluffy, brushed pile fabric that gives it a luxurious feel. This one has a more luxurious feel, but it also looks heavier than the one for the 02R.

1. The color of the cushion material in the floor mat area is gray, which is different from the 02R (light blue), and the color of the backing fabric of the floor carpet itself, such as the area under the seat, is also black, which is different from the 02R (white).

1. I had heard that the NSX-R's floor carpets are light, so of course I compared the weight. I measured the weight of a complete set of floor carpets for the coupe (including the side cowl linings), and the result was 7.28 kg.

1. Next, we measured the weight of a complete set of floor carpets for the 02R (including side cowl linings), which came out to 4.80 kg, making the 02R version 2.48 kg lighter than the Coupe version.

After installing the 02R carpet

1. As we are waiting for the dashboard and interior panels to be replaced, we are unable to install the seats and other parts, so we have only installed the carpet for now. The red color and simple texture of the loop pile fabric give it a sporty impression. Perhaps because the fabric is thin, the body feels firm when you touch it with your hand.

Emergency flare holder comparison

1. I thought the emergency flares I had been using wouldn't fit, but it turns out the size of the emergency flares holders for the 1991 Coupe and 02R are different. It seems that production of the traditional emergency flares is nearing end, and newer vehicles are equipped with thinner emergency flares. The holder can be purchased separately, so it seems like it would be useful if you want to change to a thinner emergency flare.

MITA 02R-style floor mats

1. Choosing floor mats is one of the biggest challenges when you switch to New Pure Red floor carpets.
   Genuine floor mats for all NSX models have been discontinued, so the only realistic options are aftermarket products or used parts—however, the chances of finding used parts are extremely low.
   Even if a set appears on Yahoo! Auctions, it will likely sell for an unrealistic price.
   In August 2025, a set advertised for the 02R was listed on Yahoo! Auctions with a desired price of 500,000 JPY. Despite being a reproduction item, it was snapped up almost immediately.
   Note: These reproductions were produced as a joint project by three owners’ clubs to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the NSX.
   There are surprisingly few dark-red fabrics on the market; most are a bright red. I couldn’t find a shop that could custom-make fabric close to the 02R’s New Pure Red.
   So, since the MITA mats also come with a replica NSX-R emblem, I decided to try the MITA floor mats.

Color difference vs. the 02R carpet

1. Depending on the lighting, it looks a much brighter red compared to the new pure red of the 02R. It may be closer to the pure red (R105L).

1. The rubber on the back of the genuine floor mats has many spikes that dig into the floor carpet to prevent it from slipping. The back of the MITA floor mats is flat and has a grid pattern that is supposed to be anti-slip, but when I actually drove, they didn't slip at all.

Fixing holes on the MITA floor mats

1. The fixing pins on the body that secure the floor mats are designed to lock by rotating the tip, so the eyelets on the floor mats are oval. MITA floor mats have perfectly round eyelets that cannot be locked, but it seems unlikely that the eyelets will come off the pins.

1. The MITA floor mats feel much lighter just by holding them in your hand, so they must be much lighter. First, we measured the weight of the genuine floor mats for the coupe, and the result was 4.16 kg.

1. Next, we measured the weight of the MITA 02R-style floor mats. The result was 2.50 kg, which is 1.66 kg lighter than the genuine products. For reference, the genuine floor mats for the 92R weigh approximately 2.35 kg, and the genuine floor mats for the 02R weigh approximately 3.75 kg (※). *Weight was measured by someone who owns genuine floor mats.

1. There are also trim clips specifically for the New Pure Red, so I bought them without forgetting. The parts search says I need three, but I don't know where to attach them other than the two at the passenger's feet.
