Selecting the 92R Steering Wheel
With the price of genuine parts continuing to rise,
I decided to go ahead with my plan to replace the steering wheel with an NSX-R genuine unit.
There are two types of genuine NSX-R steering wheels:
one for the 92R and one for the 02R. The stitching is different in color, with the 92R having red stitching and the 02R having black stitching. My vehicle is mainly configured to 02R specifications,
but the interior features Ultrasuede with red stitching,
so I chose the 92R steering wheel to match the interior stitching.
Choosing the 02R Horn Button
Ideally, I would have liked to use the 92R horn button, but since the 92R version was discontinued, I purchased the 02R version, which was still in production. I've only ever compared them in photos, but the silver background of the logo on the 92R seems to be a little darker than that on the 02R. There don't seem to be any other differences, so I do not think it is possible to identify the model by appearance alone.
NSX-R Genuine Steering Parts Set (Unopened)
- Before opening. Since I was going to install it on a removable boss (Rapfix), I didn't purchase a steering boss (hub COMP.). I also didn't purchase a center nut because I wasn't going to replace it this time.
- The steering wheel itself was in a white inner box inside a cardboard box with a manufacturer's label attached, and the inner box had a label with the following information: 08U97-SL0-0000-05 WHEEL COMP.STRG RED STITCH, φ350
- Condition after opening. Genuine parts are expensive and valuable these days, so I try to take photos before and after opening as much as possible to keep as a record.

92R genuine steering fixing hole
- A regular MOMO steering wheel has six fixing holes in the center of the spokes, but the NSX-R genuine steering wheel has three additional fixing holes offset by 30 degrees, for a total of nine fixing holes. Six of the fixing bolts are fixed from above the ring, but the remaining three are used to directly fix the steering wheel and boss in the holes offset by 30 degrees. The three fixing bolts are hidden under the ring, so they are not visible after installation. All fixing holes are countersunk, so you can also fix the steering wheel without using a ring.
- The back of the spoke is engraved with the following: MADE IN ITALY TYP D35 KBA 70116 4-18
- The red stitching is a feature of the 92R. Compared to the stitching used on the interior of my car, it is a brighter, more lustrous red.

92R genuine steering wheel fixed to Rapfix
- Since the Raffix side has 12 holes, I thought I could also install the three bolts that directly secure it to the steering wheel, but the fixing holes on the Raffix side are offset by 30 degrees, which is the pitch for NARDI, so I couldn't install it. To install the NSX-R genuine steering wheel, you need fixing holes that are offset by 30 degrees from the MOMO mounting pitch.
- I wanted to use as many genuine parts as possible, so I also purchased a genuine horn button holder, but the genuine horn button holder did not fit the Rafix (in the case of the Rafix, you can attach the horn button by using the included MOMO horn ring).
- Actual diameter measurement. *I forgot to measure it, so I added it later.

92R Steering Wheel Replacement Completed
- Although it's called a replacement, it's easy; once you've fixed it to the Rapfix, all you have to do is insert it into the male end. Before the replacement, the steering wheel had silver NARDI spokes, which gave it a very aftermarket feel, but the black MOMO spoke steering wheel gives it a more subdued impression. It also matches the red stitching on the interior, giving the overall interior a more luxurious feel. The interior fabric is also made of Ultrasuede, which I think gives it a feel similar to the interior of the 92R. Looking at the finished product after installation, I'm starting to feel like I want to replace all the parts that are available in a genuine matte finish for the NSX-R, such as the meter inner visor and column cover.
02R Genuine vs Fake Horn Button Comparison
- Having acquired a genuine 02R horn button, I wanted to compare it with the fake buttons I've been seeing a lot lately, so I bought one to test it out. It cost 2,800 yen. Although the fake button is 02R-specific, the part number is the Type S black logo button (78514-SL0-Z71ZA).
- The label on the package of the genuine product has a matte finish, while the fake product has a glossy, laminated finish. The font of the letters is also different: the genuine product has letters made up of tiny dots, while the fake product has smooth letters with no visible dots.
- Scanning the QR code on the genuine product's label with a smartphone reveals text such as the part number, country of origin, etc. It's possible that the fake button's label is simply a copy of the genuine Type S label, but scanning the QR code on the fake button's label also revealed the same information as the genuine product.

02R Genuine vs Fake Horn Button (Front)
- The horn button itself is difficult to distinguish from the real thing from a distance, but there is a clear difference in the black resin around the periphery. The genuine product has a matte finish on the surface, while the fake is treated with a matte paint and does not have a matte finish on the surface. Also, upon closer inspection, the Honda logo and horn mark on the fake are deeper than on the genuine product, and the edges of the indentations are rounded. *The genuine product has a protective film over the Honda logo.
02R Genuine vs Fake Horn Button (Back)
- The genuine product has one terminal on the back, while the fake has two. The terminals are crimped differently, and the MOMO logo on the fake appears to be rougher than the genuine product. The genuine product is grounded via the button holder, so I suspect the two-terminal design doesn't even exist. Also, the genuine button doesn't rotate, but the fake rotates 360 degrees without limit, so it will end up shifting to a strange orientation as you use it.
